Historic Downtown

Take a stroll through Monroe’s downtown and you may feel as though you’ve stepped into the pages of a historic book. Monroe’s Courthouse Square has serves as the hub of trade and commerce since the Green County courthouse was built in 1891.

The Chamber of Commerce is very fortunate to be located close to Monroe’s Historic Downtown Square, in the old Arabut Ludlow Memorial Library. The Arabut Ludlow Memorial Library opened in May of 1905 and served the community for over 90 years before the Monroe Public Library opened in April of 1996. The old library now houses organizations and small businesses, including the chamber.

At our Historic Downtown Square, you’ll find a number of unique specialty stores, professional services, eclectic restaurants and entertainment options that are nearby.

There are many historic sites to see when visiting Monroe, such as the Green County Courthouse, Green County Jail, Monroe Arts Center, and the National Historic Cheesemaking Center. Don’t forget to stop by the Green County Historical Society Museum and take a tour of the Bethel School, a one room school built in 1868.

There are a number of not-to-be-missed events that take place throughout the year in downtown Monroe, including the nationally renowned Green County Cheese Days Festival, which draws hundreds to thousands of people. The Monroe Balloon and Blue Festival, Farmers Market, Minhas Blues Festival, Green County Fair, and more.

While you’re here tour the Minhas Brewery and stop by one of our many cheese factories for a tour and to try some of Green County’s best award winning cheese.

If you’re looking for a nice place to relax and have a meal, that also has great history, stop by Bullets or Swiss Haus, or take a chance and try the Limburger cheese sandwich at Baumgartners, Wisconsin’s oldest cheese store.

During the holidays, enjoy Turner Hall’s annual Christkindlmarkt, a German tradition dating back to the 14th century that features unique handcrafted items from area vendors for gift-giving.

It’s all happening in Historic Monroe.
